KABUL (SW): The Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah has acknowledged that despite rigorous efforts by the government, peace remains a distant dream in the country.
He said this while exchanging views with journalist in Istanbul on his way back to Afghanistan after attending the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) Summit. Commenting on the fresh offensives announced by the Taliban, Abdullah said it would not deter the Government of National Unity from its efforts for peace in the country.
To a question in regard to Pakistan’s role in bringing the Taliban to the negotiation table, the CEO said more cooperation was needed on this front. “We are studying the situation to determine whether they are ready to honestly cooperate or not? The situation has not changed, the violence in Afghanistan has not dropped, despite all our efforts the activities of the terrorist groups have not dropped but it does not mean that we would cutoff ties with a country at once”.
Abdullah stressed that the GNU in Afghanistan is fully committed for peace but unfortunately its stance in this perspective has not been properly received.
He called upon political forces in Afghanistan to unite against the offensives announced by the Taliban. He added that the OIC has underlined the need of religious scholars to address the menace of violence and intolerance in the Muslim Ummah.
