KABUL (SW) – CEO Abdullah Abdullah has said the Loya Jirga (grand consultative session) for peace has failed to yield significant positive outcomes.
In an interview with a foreign media outlet, Abdullah said the LJ has instead inflicted financial losses upon the government and the people. He questioned the need for such grand gathering for peace at this moment.
In the meantime, Mohammad Haneef Atmar, a presidential candidate, has issued a statement saying the LJ was based on personal wish of the government in a bid to suppress the opposition and undermine efforts for peace. The statement added the government wishes to extend its tenure and take the peace process as hostage.
The four-day consultative session for peace concluded on Friday. It issued a 21-point resolution adopted by some 3200 peace delegates. “We the participants of the Loya Jirga are determined to bring lasting peace in the country”, one point of this resolution said.
The Taliban have also rejected this consultative session. The insurgents blamed the government for orchestrating a ‘political show’.
