Abbas Stanikzai replaces Tayab Agha in Taliban’s Qatar office

04/08/2015

KABUL (SW): In a clear move to downplay the sudden resignation by Tayab Agha, Taliban leadership have quietly titled Mullah Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai as the new head of the militants’ politica office in Doha, Qatar.

Former head of the office Tayyab Agha resigned from his post following the nomination of Mullah Akhtar Mansoor as the new Emir. Tayyab Agha had served as secretary to the late Supreme Leader Mullah Omar.

“As the announcement of the demise of Esteemed Amir ulMomeen (Mullah Omar) was kept secret for almost two years so I consider it a historical mistake of the concerned individuals. Agreement to negotiations through Pakistan has played an important role in leaking the news of his death”, Agha said in a message.

The new head of Qatar office has served as deputy foreign minister during Taliban rule. In an apparent move to downplay shuffle, Stanikzais’ appointment has not be announced instead in his allegiance message with Mullah Mansoor, Stanikzai has been titled as the “Head of Qatar Office”.

“I and other members of the Political Office of the Islamic Emirate declare allegiance to the honourable Mullah Akhtar Mansoor. We consider this decision in accordance with Islamic Sharia and will follow his instructions,” Stanekzai said in a statement published in Pashto on Taliban’s official site.

“We assure our full support to the new chief,” the statement added. The newly appointed head of the Qatar office has a military background even before joining the ranks of Taliban.
