A tale of sex change in Kunar

07/07/2018

ASADABAD (SW) – Some three years ago, the family of Abdul Hadi in Asadabad, Kunar, received the good news about the change of sex of his two daughters.

Abdul Hadi – father of nine daughters – was not alive to receive the news of two of his daughters becoming sons and moving out of home to work and share the financial burden of the family.

Sharing the tale of this phenomenal experience with Salam Watandar, the two boys said they underwent change of sex surgery in Pakistan, and now need financial support to complete the process.

After the surgery, 22-year-old Safia turned into Safiullah and 18-year-old Zakira turned into Zakirullah. The boys said they spent some 400,000 rupees on the process. They complaint about body pain while executing physically intensive tasks in day to day life.

The two now work in a tailor shop in the provincial capital, Asadabad, earning just enough to survive.

Commenting on this, Dr. Allah Nazar, head of the Jalalabad Regional Hospital, said the two were born as boys, but financial constraints of the family prevented them from receiving initial treatment. He went on to say the hospital in Jalalabad has full capacity to provide them the required treatment. Dr. Nazar clarified change of sex is a widespread practice in many different countries, but it is not allowed in Afghanistan.
