LASHKARGAH (SW): A number of schools in the southern Helmand province that were closed due to insecurity have been re-opened to students.
Officials at the provincial education department told Salam Watandar that most of the closed schools were located in the restive Marja and Nad-e-Ali districts that have now been re-opened.
Efforts by the local elders to convince the armed rebels to allow the schools to function have led to the development.
Abdul Mateen Jaffar, head of the education department noted that the insecurity led to the closure of some 50 schools across the province. He said that the officials have managed to reopen these schools including those in Washir district, which were closed for almost 10 years but now students can attend them.
According to the officials at the education department, 102 schools are still closed out of a total of 380 schools in the restive districts like Sangin, Mosa Qala and Nawzad.
They assured that they would spare no effort to reopen as many schools as possible.
Helmand is one of the restive provinces in the country, which has witnessed lack of development and education programs over recent years. Most of girl students have been deprived of education due to insecurity here.
