A district in Baghlan province without a Bazaar

13/04/2018

BAGHLAN (SW): 24 years since its incorporation as a district, Jilga district still does not have a Bazaar or market due to disputes between the residents and the district governor.

Since the fall of the Taliban regime, the government of Karzai followed and now the National Unity Government, millions of dollars have been spent in Baghlan, however, from reconstruction and development to security and energy, none have been implemented in Jilga district.

A number of the residents in Jilga district told Salam Watandar that the reason behind this is the disputes between the district governor and the residents of Jilga.

Fazl Menallah, is the only shopkeeper in the district who sell only a few items, however, the prices of the items found in Fazl’s shop is threefold higher than the normal market price. He said that he started his shop three years ago.

The residents of Jilga told bitter stories of abnormalities in this district. In a remote area of this district, Noor Mohammad, a disabled man complained about the cruelty of unknown gunmen and said a group of gunmen burned his house down and no one helped him.

Despite efforts, I was not able to get the opinion of Jilga district governor about these issues.

Abdul Hai Nemati, governor of Baghlan who has visited this district recently told Salam Watandar that a committee has been formed to investigate the issues in this district and in addition to dealing with the security situation also resolve the disputes between the district governor and the residents as well as find a suitable location for building a Bazaar for the residents.

Jilga district has more than 40 thousand inhabitants and is located 100 km away from Pul-e Khumri city, the center of Baghlan province, and most of the year due to snow and flooding, the main road to this district is blocked.
