KABUL (SW): Civil society activists urged the government on Sunday to take serious notice of the incident of forced marriage with a minor in Nangarhar province reported few days back.
A young woman Saima [not actual name], said last week that her husband named Khodai Rahm who is bodyguard of a local commander, charged her for not being virgin on the first night of their marriage, and went after her 10 year old sister. The incident reportedly took place in the Shewa district of the province six months ago.
Nadar Khan, father of the victims told journalists in Kabul on Sunday that he wants justice. He urged government and local authorities to look into the case. He added that the case is not formally registered with authorities and was told by government official not to pursue the case against the outlawed individuals.
Hamida Wardak, civil society activist said that the case should not be forgotten like many other cases of violence against women.
Civil society activist passed a resolution calling on judiciary to take action against the culprits and government officials who took the case lightly. The activists warned that they will halt their activities if proper action is not taken.
Provincial governor’s spokesperson has said that 4 suspects including the man who performed the marriage ceremony of both girls are arrested.
