KABUL (SW) – The plane carrying the Afghan government delegation flew from Kabul on Friday for Doha for the intra-Afghan talks with the Taliban on Saturday.
The High Council for National Reconciliation announced that its chairman Abdullah Abdullah and his accompanying delegation left Kabul for Doha. According to a statement, Abdullah will speak on behalf of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan at the opening ceremony of the talks.
Prior to his visit to Qatar, the HCNR chairman called the start of the inter-Afghan peace talks as an historic event in the last four decades and expressed hope that it would end the current war and establish a just, lasting, dignified peace.
During the visit to Doha, Abdullah will also meet with Qatari officials and a number of special guests at the opening ceremony of the historic peace talks between the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban.
The delegation will also have Acting Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar, Minister of State for Peace Syed Saadat Mansour Naderi and Abdul Salam Rahimi, Special Representative of the President for Peace Affairs.
Nader Naderi and Abdul Hafiz Mansour, members of the Afghan peace negotiating team, told Salam Watandar the team is heading to Doha with confidence and hope.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a number of Qatari government officials are also attending the opening ceremony of the talks in Doha.
