MAIMANA (SW) – The Taliban militants set fire to a girls' school in the Khwaja Sabzposh district of Faryab province, an official confirmed on Friday.
According to the security officials, the school had 16 classrooms and 750 students were enrolled here. Provincial governor, Naqibullah Fayek said the Taliban have burned the school to show their opposition to girls attending schools.
The Taliban have not yet commented.
This comes a day after a similar incident in Taluqan city, center of Takhar province. According to the provincial education department officials, unidentified gunmen set fire to the Abu Osman Taluqani boys' school at around 2 am on Thursday.
Hassamuddin Nazari, head of the department of education, wrote on his Facebook page that it was one of the most important and central schools in the province, with nearly 3,000 students studying. He accused the local officials of the province of recklessness and called for investigations.
This was the third time in the last six months that schools in the province have been set on fire.
