Multiple casualties following air raid in Herat

HERAT CITY (SW) – An air raid in Herat province has killed and wounded dozens of people, including six prominent Taliban fighters, a well-placed source told Salam Watandar.

A security official told Salam Watandar that the attack took place in the village of Kham Ziarat between Guzara and Adraskan districts in Herat province. According to him, the incident took place when a number of locals went to visit Mullah Nabi, a Taliban commander who had just been released from Pul-e-Charkhi prison.

Jilani Farhad, spokesman for the governor of Herat, said the attack took place in an area where a number of prominent Taliban members, Maulvi Haidar, Abdullah Akbari, Mullah Rahmatullah, Zabihullah Akbari, Mullah Mohammad and Mullah Abdul Haq, known as Osama – had gathered. According to him, local Taliban leaders were killed during the meeting as they planned to attack government facilities.

A Herat police spokesman said that at the same time, a vehicle carrying civilians collided with a roadside mine and a number of civilians were killed.

Meanwhile, the Taliban said in a statement that all the victims of the air raid were civilians.
