Week after peace deal, Taliban kill 49 people

KABUL (SW) – A week after the U.S – Taliban peace deal, at least 49 civilians and security forces got killed in attacks by the insurgents.

According to local officials, the Taliban attacked security forces in Helmand, Herat, Farah, Badghis, Kunduz, Kandahar, Takhar, Nangarhar, Parwan, Nuristan, Laghman and Ghor provinces.

Local officials in these provinces told Salam Watandar 30 security forces and 19 civilians got killed and 31 security forces and 17 civilians got injured in these attacks.

According to officials, as a result of these attacks, 20 Taliban militants were killed and more than 20 others were injured.

Helmand province has suffered the most in the past week in this regard. Helmand governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak said 10 civilians were killed and wounded in a week of bomb blasts in the province. He said eight security forces were killed and 10 others were wounded in Taliban attacks on government forces. He added that the Taliban also suffered casualties.

After Helmand, Herat is one of the other provinces where the Taliban carried out large-scale attacks in the districts of Kak Robatangi, Shindand and Pashtun Zarghoun during the week. Herat governor’s spokesman, Jilani Farhad said 3 security forces and 7 civilians were killed and 17 others were wounded in the attacks.

Kunduz has also witnessed widespread Taliban attacks following the signing of a U.S – Taliban peace deal. Hijratullah Akbari, spokesman for the Kunduz Police Command, said that in the past week, the Taliban have attacked security posts four times, killing eight policemen and 10 Taliban.

Khalil Asir, a spokesman for the Takhar Police Command, said that after weeks of violence, the Taliban set up checkpoints along the Kunduz – Takhar route and harassed people. Local authorities in the provinces of Kandahar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Nuristan and Farah say the Taliban have carried out attacks on police stations several times in the past week, but have been repelled by security forces.
