KABUL (SW) – Rehmatullah Nabil, a presidential candidate and Former head of the NDS, has warned of dire consequences if a peace deal is not reached before spring.
In a series of tweets, he said given the recent developments in the region, if the US-Taliban peace deal is not finalized by this spring/summer and Afghan political elite failed to form a national consensus based on national interests, it will not be a surprise that the Taliban may be provided Man-portable air-defense systems, which will be game changer for them in the Afghan conflict.
“Afghans should prefer their national interests on personal interests. So far @ashrafghani has been failed to form a national consensus. Crucial days ahead of Afghanistan”, warned Nabil.
Commenting on this, Mirza Yaarmand, an expert on security affairs, said if the Taliban indeed got such a system to attack aircrafts from the ground, things would get very complicated in Afghanistan.
Ghulam Aaqa Eskandari, a political commentator, said the only edge Afghan forces have over the Taliban is the air power, and if the insurgents got counter-strategy for this, they would have the upper hand.
The defense ministry has not commented on this.
Talks between the Taliban and the U.S. have been underway since 2019, but the two have so far failed to reach a deal.
