KABUL (SW) – Markus Potzel, German Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, on Wednesday vowed to help revive the stalled peace process on the request of Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation
Addressing a moot here in connection with the women’s role in the peace process, Potzel said the matters related to the withdrawal of foreign troops, fight against terrorism, ceasefire and intra-Afghan dialogue would be discussed in the next round of talks with the Taliban. He asserted the gains of the past 18 years need to be preserved.
Speaking on the occasion, Idress Zaman, deputy minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the sixth round of talks between the U.S. and Taliban in Qatar failed to deliver tangible results. He called for the comprehensive role of Germany in the peace process.
In a separate gathering, Faramarz Tamana, a presidential candidate, said release of the Taliban prisoners at a time of raging war indicates poor management of the security affairs. He said a ceasefire should be announced to reciprocate the release of the insurgents.
The release of the Taliban prisoners has been widely criticized.
