MAZAR-I-SHARIF (SW) – The Peace and Moderation electoral team led by Mohammad Haneef Atmar stressed on Monday the National Unity Government would have no legitimacy after the end of its tenure in May.
Addressing a gathering to mark the death anniversary of former Jehadi commander, Marshal Mohammad Qaseem Faheem, in Mazar-i-Sharif, Atmar and his allies Mohammad Yonus Qanooni and Atta Mohammad Noor, chief executive of the Jamiat-e-Islami party, demanded an interim set-up should be established after May. They vowed not to allow President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in office after the end of his tenure in May.
Speaking on the occasion, Noor said he would not allow president Ghani in office for a single day after the end of his tenure in May. He said to avoid a power vacuum, the presidential candidates and political leaders should gather to formulate a strategy.
Atmar also demanded formation of an interim set-up after the end of NUG tenure in May. He stressed the government should not cause hurdles and a Constitution interim set-up should hold the forthcoming presidential elections.
The Peace and Moderation team also expressed support for the peace process, amendment of the Constitution and safeguarding the gains of the past 18 years.
Meanwhile, Shah Hussain Murtazai, deputy spokesman for the president, has dubbed this gathering in Mazar-i-Sharif as an early electoral campaign. This comes as the president Ghani’s political opponents have blamed him on multiple occasions for engaging in electoral campaign ahead of time.
