‘Moot in Kandahar has nothing to do with Loya Jirga’

29/11/2017

KANDAHAR CITY (SW): A number of former and current government officials and political leaders have gathered in Kandahar for a three-day moot on current affairs in the country.

Mohammad Yosuf Yonusi, organizer of the moot and member of the provincial council, informed Salam Watandar that Kandahar has always rescued Afghanistan from troubled times. He said up to 80 members of the parliament, and other politicians namely Ismael Khan, Zaher Qadeer, Atta Mohammad Noor, Mohammad Yonus Qanoni, Mohammad Mohaqiq and others would participate in this meeting.

He said the moot has nothing to do with the remarks made by former president Hamid Karzai in regard to the Loya Jirga (grand council). Yonusi said the gathering would deliberate upon ways and means to take the country out of current crisis.

Meanwhile, the general public in Kandahar have mixed feelings about the gathering. Khalid Ahmad and Sheren Khan, two Kandahar University students, said such gatherings are usually symbolic, and waste of resources. Many others believe those coming for the gathering have done nothing for the welfare of the country when they were in power.

However, a local civil society activist Abdul Qader Taken, was of the opinion that gathering of so many leaders of diverse background is a good omen for the country. This is a rare gathering of so many politicians in Kandahar in a while.
