KABUL (SW): The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Monday approved the Presidential Decree on documenting and making public the assets of government officials.
The decree with 3 articles and 16 points was approved by the house with a majority vote. Some members, however, rejected the decree calling it contradiction of the Constitution. Some even called it 'violation of the Sharia law'.
Nasrullah Sadiquizada Neeli, member of the house from Daikundiz province, said on the occasion that no one has the right to compel the WJ members or other officials to make their assets public as it is 'violation of the Sharia law'. He stressed whoever owns the assets has the right not to disclose it.
Meanwhile, a large number of the parliamentarians approved the move to legally bind officials to document their assets. The law applies on government officials such as ministers, governors, mayors, parliamentarians and other civilian and security officials, and compels them to disclose their assets so that transparency can be ensured.
Saheb Khan, a member of the house from Logar, said on the occasion that he can identify WJ members who have accumulated huge wealth after becoming parliamentarians. He said those opposing this law would be considered as suspect.
It is worth noticing that the Afghan government assured the international community at Brussels Conference that assets of all government officials would be document and made public.
