The unbearable human and financial losses of Paktia attack

GARDEZ (SW): Tuesday’s brazen multiple-suicide attacks in Paktia have inflicted financial losses worth millions besides the heavy and tragic death toll.

According to the local officials, the multiple suicide car bombings aimed at the police headquarters in the provincial capital Gardez city killed up to 21 security personnel, including the police chief Toryalay Abdyani, and some 20 civilians. More than one hundred people got wounded in these attacks claimed by the Taliban.

On Wednesday, the site of the attack was depicting an image of a full-blown war with the police headquarters blown to pieces, nearby shops, markets and houses shattered. The hostel of Paktia University and a nearby mosque also witnessed destruction.

Bismillah Jan, a local trader, informed Salam Watandar that the destruction sustained by the nearby shops alone is estimated to be over $ 2.5 million. Zaman Gul, another trader whose supermarket went up in flames, said the human as well as the financial losses are unbearable.

Naseer Elmyar, director for the chamber of commerce and industry in Paktia, said in this regard that the estimated losses sustained by the private sector and residents alone is worth more than $ 700, 000. He urged upon the government to come for the rescue of these affected people.

The losses sustained by the public sector are not estimated yet.
