KABUL (SW): Nai – supporting open media organization, has said some security agencies are eyeing to impose restrictions on social media platforms.
Abdul Mujib Khilwatgar, chief executive of Nai, told a press conference here on Thursday that some security agencies are pushing the Ministry of Information and Culture to impose restrictions on social media platforms and on the use of internet in the country.
He said the draft law for regulating the social media would soon be formulated, but some security agencies aim to curb the fundamental rights of the citizens granted by the Constitution. Highlighting the significance of the social media in informing and educating the masses in Afghanistan, Khilwatgar said restrictions in this regard are direct violation of the Article 34 of the Constitution.
Nai urged the Ministry of Information of Culture not to bow down to the pressure exerted by some security agencies, and to expose the forces eying to restrict the liberty of social media users.
Meanwhile, Najib Nangyal, spokesman for the Ministry of Information and Culture, told Salam Watandar not any security organization has approached them for any such restrictions. He, however, informed that a commission would be formed to look into the activities of some websites that are deemed harmful to the national interests.
The draft for regulation of social media has been formulated by Nai, and is likely to be approved soon.
