Shaheen Corps carnage linked to weak intelligence

KABUL (SW): A number of security affairs analysts have linked the deadly Taliban assault on the 209-Shaheen Corps to the weak inter-services intelligence in the country.

On Friday, a group of Taliban militants stormed the 209-Shaheen Corps of the Afghan National Army (ANA) in the Balkh province at a time when the soldiers were either having lunch or performing the Friday prayers in a mosque there.

Gen. Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for the Ministry of Defence (MoD), said on Saturday that over one hundred soldiers have been either killed or wounded. President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani rushed to the site of the attack early on Saturday. Ghani has linked this attack with the stepped-up attacks on the militants nationwide.

Arif Rehmani, a member of the parliament, told Salam Watandar that the inter-services intelligence network is quite poor that often leads to loopholes in the security which provides the enemies an opportunity to attack. Atiqullah Amarkhel, former Air Chief, said widespread corruption, weak leadership and fragile justice system have allowed the Taliban to infiltrate in the security sector, and cause havoc. Amrkhel also lamented that the leaders in the government are more concerned about securing more and more powers and perks instead of serving the nation.

Kabul Khan Tadbeer, an analyst on security affairs, also highlighted the need for smarter and effective intelligence to quell such attacks from recurring.

The Taliban have celebrated the attack on the ANA in Mazar-e-Sharif, and have warned of worst to come in the coming fighting season.
