KABUL (SW): The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Unity Government (NUG) has expressed opposition to the proposal of using previous voter cards for the forthcoming elections.
Mujib Rahman Rahimi, CEO spokesman, addressing a press conference here on Thursday said use of previous voter cards will put the elections in crisis. Citing the example of 2014 Presidential Elections, Rahimi claimed serious fraud was committed back then. He said fake voter cards damaged the peoples’ trust in electoral commissions. It is the time to restore faith in the election system and the electoral commissions, he said.
The electoral commissions should act in line with the suggestions of the Election Reform Commission, and take decisions in consultation with the government, civil society and election watchdogs. He stressed consultations are underway for the appointment of secretary of the Independent Election Commission (IEC). Rahimi criticized the previous administration of the electoral commissions, and stressed that it would be ensured that the new leadership at the electoral commission has no ties with the previous one.
