KABUL (SW): The humanitarian community in Afghanistan on Saturday launched an appeal for $ 550 million to support an estimated 5.7 million needy Afghans in the year 2017.
Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah thanked the international community for its support last year. He promised the aid money would be spent transparently.
Mark Bowden, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, said while launching this appeal that the year 2017 is exceptionally challenging for Afghanistan which is home to most Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and repatriates in the world after Syria.
“The humanitarian community in Afghanistan has been tireless in efforts to save lives and reduce the suffering of millions of people. However, the current scale of need in Afghanistan calls upon the humanitarian community to deliver increased levels of assistance to ensure the lives of many Afghans are not endangered, and so that they can live in safety and dignity,” said the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, Mark Bowden
With this appeal, the international community’s support has been sought for strategic, life-saving interventions in Afghanistan related to food, health care, nutrition, safe water and sanitation related projects.
