KABUL (SW): The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Monday expressed fear for their lives amid surge in attacks against the lawmakers.
Taking part in the debate in this regard, a number of MPs criticized the government for not doing enough for the safety of the parliamentarians. The members lamented that they do not feel secure even at home.
Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, Speaker of the house, said the WJ members are particularly under threat from the terrorists. He mentioned at least two MPs were attacked by the militants last month alone.
It is worth noticing that the residence of Mir Wali, MP from Helmand province, was stormed by the militants in the capital Kabul. Mir Wali and his wife sustained injuries in the attack while their grandson and a number of guests and guards lost their lives. Fakoor Baheshti, another MP from Bamyan, survived a roadside bomb blast in Kabul.
Ibrahimi said the law enforcement agencies constantly warn the lawmakers about threats posed to their lives, but do nothing to protect them.
