QALA-E-NAU (SW): The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) on Thursday managed to recapture the historic Morechaq Castle in Badghes province from the Taliban militants.
This old fort in the Bala Murghab district was under the militants’ occupation for two months. Security officials have said they have destroyed poppy crop cultivated on some 15 thousand jeribs after recapturing this castle. The Taliban overrun this castle when 40 security personnel guarding it surrendered following a long siege.
Jumma Adeel, Commander of the Afghan Border Police (ABP)’s 5th Western Zone, told Salam Watandar the Taliban militants damaged some parts of this castle, and cultivated poppy on areas around it.
Bala Murghab is one of the restive parts in the province. Last month, Gen. Mohaiudin Ghori, Commander of the Afghan National Army (ANA)’s 207-Zafar Corps, died when his helicopter crashed here.
