CHAGCHARAN (SW): Dearth of lady doctors and mid-wives in Ghor province has left thousands of women deprived of basic health services here.
According to the local officials at the health directorate, they are in dire need of at least ten qualified female doctors. The provincial council has also raised concerns over lack of female doctors and mid-wives in Feroz Koh; the provincial capital as well as other districts. They believe one of the main reasons behind it is the fact that there are literally no facilities for female education in the province.
Anisa Ghayor, member of provincial council told Salam Watandar that deprivation of education is the core cause for the shortage of female doctors. There is only one specialist female doctor at the Ghor Provincial Hospital despite the fact that up to 40 women are admitted here due to health complications on daily basis.
Officials at the public health directorate have said there are around 70 clinics across the province where female patients are attended by assistant doctors or nurses only.
Dr. Ghulam Nabi, director for health in the province, told Salam Watandar that lack of female doctors have particularly affected the lives of would-be mothers. He lamented that fragile state of security and other social constrains have also barred young girls from seeking higher studies or being appointed as doctors or nurses in far away districts.
