KANDAHARCITY (SW): Ragging violence has claimed the lives of more than 50 children in Kandahar province during the past eight months, officials said on Monday.
Saleema Ahad, director for children’s affairs at the Independent Human Rights Commission (IHRC) in the province, has said that 59 children died and 99 other sustained injuries due to the raging violence in the past eight months. She added that these figures are based on the records available at the Mirwais Regional Public Hospital in Kandahar, and are confirmed by the IHRC’s own record keeping.
Expressing grim concerns over the rise in children’s casualties, Saleema urged the warring sides to ensure civilians, particularly children are not harmed.
Kandahar citizens are equally concerned over this dilemma. Farman, a resident of the second district in the city, told Salam Watandar that killing children is like eliminating a complete generation. He stressed that Islam prohibits claiming the lives of an innocent person, and whoever is committing such acts is not worth pardon.
Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are blamed for a large number of civilian casualties. The government asserts that Taliban are behind most of the IED attacks; a claim rejected by the rebels.
