Horrific attack leaves daunting memories behind

KABUL (SW): The twin suicide blasts that ripped through the crowd during yesterday’s demonstration have left haunting memories in the mind of those who survived the horrific attack on the civilians.

The brazen attack, claimed by the pro-Daesh rebels, have killed at least 81 people and over 200 are wounded. Salam Watandar talked to a number of wounded individuals at the Estiqlal Hospital about their health and thoughts on the attack.

Mohammad Latif, who participated in the rally along with his wife and son, said that luckily his son left the crowd to fetch water when the blasts occurred.

“When I regained my consciousness, I realized that I was in the hospital and my wife and son were not around”, he said. Latif said that his hands and feet were injured in the incident.

Mohammad Salem, a university student, who was also wounded in yesterday’s blast, said that he had an exam yesterday, and after taking part in it, he joined the protest rally. “I was covering myself from the sunshine under a tree when the explosions took place, and I saw glasses scattered everywhere and a piece of the glass hit my head”, he recalled.

Laila, who has survived the blast, said that she was getting a bottle of water when the blast occurred. She said that when she opened her eyes she was in a hospital.

Speaking to Salam Watandar, Mohammad Saber Nasib, the head of Estiqlal Hospital, said that minutes after the blasts took place as many as 88 wounded people and 17 dead bodies were shifted to Estiqlal Hospital. He said that a number of wounded people were rushed to other hospitals in the capital as well.

After the deadly explosions, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani announced a day of mourning across the country. Ghani also directed to fly the Afghan flag at half-mast at all public buildings in the country and abroad. The site of the blast “Deh Mazang Square’ has now been named as the “Martyrs Square’
