HERAT CITY (SW): Officials at the Environment Department in western Herat province have expressed concern over the illegal hunting of endangered birds and animals in several districts across the province.

Speaking to Salam Watandar, Nasir Ahmad Faizi, head of the department said that in addition to illegal hunting, there is a growing concern about the illegal cutting of the threes in the province as well. He noted that animals, birds and trees play a vital role in keeping the natural environment clean, green and beautiful thus everyone has to take measures to stop this from being damaged.

He added that scarce and indigenous animals such as deer, rabbit and wolf, and birds like pewit and hoopoe are particularly in danger of being illegally hunted in restive districts such as Kahsan, Kishk, Robat Sangi, Ghoriyan, Shindand and Adrskin areas.

Jelani Farhand, the spokesperson for Herat governor, on the other hand, stated that hunting is prohibited. He vowed the local government would arrest anyone who is suspected with hunting and smuggling these birds and animals. In the meantime, Wakil Ahmad Barak, an environmentalist in Herat, said that illegal hunting is common in the insecure areas.

Concerns grew over illegal hunting of wild animals and birds when Arabs from Gulf States regularly came to Herat for hunting recently.
