KABUL (SW): Abdullah Abdullah, the Chief Executive Officer, vowed on Monday that the electoral reforms would begin tomorrow.
Speaking at the cabinet session, he said that elections are one of the fundamental principles for democracy and should not be held without bringing reforms. He stressed that the reforms would begin in coordination with the President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.
He further said that electoral reforms were one of the basic commitments by the leaders of the Government of National Unity. “We would assure the citizens that it would be implemented”, he said.
Niamatullah Ghafari, the second deputy of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house), however told Salam Watandar that electoral reforms depend on the President’s decree on election commissions’ structures, tasks and responsibilities. He emphasized that bringing changes before a decision on the President’s decree would be unconstitutional.
Earlier, the WJ has rejected the President’s decree on electoral reforms several times but the upper house (Masharano Jirga) has recently approved it.
