“Government leaders failed to fulfill commitments”

10/04/2016

KABUL (SW): Commenting over a brief stopover in Kabul by the US Foreign Secretary John Kerry, analysts argue that the leaders of the Government of National Unity (GNU) have failed to fulfill the commitments made to public.

The analysts argue that these circumstances and the differences between the President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and his CEO Abdullah Abdullah compelled Kerry to intervene and made it clear that the GNU has a life for five years and not two.

Younuf Fakaoor, an analyst, told Salam Watandar that the US Foreign Secretary’s latest visit has brought all those rumors to an end that were about the collapse of the GNU. “They (Ghani and Abdullah) have been once again directed on the track of the signed agreement between the two for the establishment of the GNU, and the Afghan citizens have been given the message that the US supports a government with the two men in-charge of affairs and striving for reforms”, he said.

The agreement between the leaders of the GNU said that the Loya Jirga (grand council) would be held and Constitution would be amended in two years time to create the post of Prime Minister besides holding parliamentary and district council elections, and so on. But most of these steps are yet to be taken.

Tahir Hashmi, Professor at the Kabul University, said in this regard that the Constitution was compromised even in the beginning for the formation of the GNU and now the Kabul government and its international backers intend to keep the system intact for at least three more years. He lamented that the law of the land is often undermined that has led to the interests of individual beyond that of the nation.

Faizullah Jalal, another Professor at the Kabul University, while commenting on the state of affairs, said that the visit of US Foreign Secretary and his demeanor has once again proved to Afghans that the fate of the country still rests in the hands of the foreigners. “The foreigners remain king makers in Afghanistan and they decide who to crown as the president and ministers”, he said.

There were rumors around here that the CEO has only few months left, and if it does not get legalized the government might collapse.
