KABUL (SW): Despite widespread condemnation, Taliban’s self-style courts continue to operate in various parts of the country posing grim concerns among the citizens.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, in an exclusive interview with a German TV said few days back that the stoning to death of a young women in Ghor province on the ruling of Taliban’s self-styled court was humiliation for him and the government. But, the militants’ courts remain intact.
The young girl in Ghor was accused of eloping and adultery and was eventually stoned to death in public. The incident has not been the only such incident as nearly two weeks ago Taliban lashed again young men who were accused of thefts and missing their prayers
Elsewhere in Baghlan, Taliban lashed another young man for drinking alcohol. In another incident, Taliban peeled-off a young man called Ahmad in Ghor and pulled his eyes out and threw his dead body from a mountain.
Although, many of such cases are put down to Taliban but it is clear without locals’ cooperation such despicable trials will be difficult.
Now, the question is why such embarrassments keep continuing?
Latif Nazari, a political analyst, told Salam Watandar that the government’s weakness as well as a prevailing traditional culture in the country have led to the repeat of such incidents. He said that Taliban in the areas under their control, impose strict self-styled Shariat law and by doing so they want to intimidate the locals to obey their rule.
He believed that if the traditional view of the citizens did not change, such trials and punishments would not end.
Sima Samar, Head of Independent Human Rights Commission in Afghanistan, too expressed her concerns regarding the growing abuse of human rights and Taliban’s self-styled courts in the remote areas of the country. She urged the government to have greater influence in the remote areas in Afghanistan to arrest and punish those who commit such acts.
Shekiba Hashemi, member of Internal Security Commission at the Wolesi Jirga, said that Taliban have no respect for any values or principals and would not spare any efforts to show their cruelties and power in the remote areas of Afghanistan. She said that corruption in the judicial system of the country has also caused the citizens to turn to Taliban to solve their cases.
Salam Watandar, in an effort to have the comments of ARG (Presidential Palace) on such trials and courts but to no avail.
