26/12/2015

LASHKARGAH (SW): Security officials have said that mopping-up operations have been conducted in Marja, Khanshin, and Sangin districts in Helmand to clear the whole province from the Taliban.

Mohammad Rasul Zazi, Spokesman for 215-Maiwand Corps told Salam Watandar that units of the Special Forces  are taking part in this operation alongside the police. He asserted that they have jointly cleared most of the areas from the Taliban. The operation has entered its fourth day as a result which nearly 50 militants have been killed and their military equipment have been destroyed, he noted.

Omar Zawak, Spokesman for Helmand’s governor, while confirming the inroads made by the security forces, added that currently the security forces have begun clearing the areas under the Taliban’s control.

The residents said that security forces have broken the siege in Sangin and a number of forces based in the district have been shifted to Lashkargah City.

They added that Taliban are not alone in the fighting as foreign fighters like Bangaladeshi and Punjabis are also fighting shoulder to shoulder with them.

Last week, Taliban made some inroads in Helmand and they even reached close to Lashkargah in a bid to capture Gerishk through which they could prevail over Helmand-Herat highway but were thwarted by the Afghan security forces and US troops.
