KABUL (SW): Organization for the Support of Landmine Victims said on Wednesday Afghanistan remains vulnerable to scores of unexploded landmines in various parts of the country.
Islamuddin Mohammadi, Head of the OSLV told journalists in Kabul today that the number of landmine victims in comparison to the 2013 has swollen by 23 percent in 2013.
The International Anti-mines Campaign estimates that some 575 civilian and security personnel lost lives to it in the past year. Similarly over 700 got wounded.
In the similar period, two demining workers lost lives and four others got wounded.
The activists said that despite vigorous efforts for demining, some 20 percent of Afghanistan is littered with mines pausing grave threat human lives. In a latest incident two days ago, eight children got killed and two others got wounded in a blast in the capital Kabul.
Jameela Afghani, Director at the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disables said on the occasion that the loss of innocent lives due to landmines was indeed a matter of grave concern.
Those associated with the demining believe that continued violence and the use of mines by the armed rebels have made their work very difficult. Organization for the Support of Landmine Victims urged the government to pay attention to those fallen prey to landmines.
