Beekeeping thrive in Nangarhar

01/08/2015

JALALABAD (SW): Farmers and traders associated with the beekeeping and honey processing in eastern Nangarhar province has claimed the trade has been flourishing.

Riaz Muhammad Rodwal, Head of Honey Processing and Beekeeping Association (HPBA) told SW there are around 200 bee forms in the province that are doing a good job. “We are striving to further improve the trade”.

He further said that the local HPBA has been busy training the farmers and providing them facilities to improve their yield. The organization collects bee from farmers across the province and transports it to the market after processing.

Farmers in Nangarhar keep the bees during spring and fall seasons and later move them to relative colder areas during the rest of the year. Rodwal argued that if more trees are planted and the forest cover is enhanced, the farmers would not need to move to neighboring Pakistan.

He added the latest surge of militancy in the province was another challenge farmers were faced with.

Muhammad Ismail, an Agriculture and Livestock Department official said in this regard that the government was aware about the challenges farmers were facing. He said the bee keeping trade has created many jobs for the locals hence government would make sure supporting it.
