HERAT CITY (SW): Business community in the western Herat province has joined hands with officials to renovate and preserve the historic blue mosque that was facing serious threat of collapse.
Around 800 years old blue mosque in heart of the city is considered as the world’s fifth biggest. Locals have repeatedly urged authorities for reconstructing parts of it and saving it from further erosion.
The roof of the mosque, which is the most vulnerable owing to scorching Sun heat, winds and rain is asphalted each year but this time the Herat Chambers of Commerce and Industry (HCCI) in cooperation with business community from rest of the country has initiated a project to conceal the roof with weather-resistant stones.
The final stage of project kicked-off on today in the presences of local officials.
Mustamand Ghori, head of the project said on the occasion that the stonework would play vital role in preserving this heritage site
Muhammad Asif Rahimi, Herat Governor promised more funds for the historic mosque.
“We are all united in reconstructing this historical site, we are even ready to pay from our salaries for it” he said.
Sayed Khatibi, President HCCI said that so far the business community have donated over 200000 $ for the project.
