MAIMANA (SW): Nicholas Haysom, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) visited restive northern Faryab province on Thursday to assess the security situation.
After meeting local authorities behind closed doors, the UNAMA chief said objective of his maiden visit to this part of the country was to have first hand impression of the situation.
On Wednesday, a suicide attacker killed 19 people in Almar district of the province. Lately, many areas in the north are witnessing a surge in militant attacks.
Haysom told reporters in the provincial capital, he would brief higher-ups in the UN about security, economy and reconstruction related issues faced by locals in Faryab.
“It is not fair that Afghanistan is fighting alone the fight of many regional countries”, he said while making a point that terrorism was a regional problem.
Everyone should play their due role, he stressed
Faryab officials welcomed this maiden visit by UNAMA chief. Abdul Sattar, Acting governor said on the occasion that Afghanistan’s security issues should be taken up as a serious regional matter by the UN.
