UNITED NATIONS (SW): The UN Security Council on Monday approved Iran nuclear deal, which was struck last week between Tehran and six world powers (the US, U.K., France, China, Russia and Germany) collectively known as “P5+1”.
Based on the historic agreement, many long imposed sanctions will be lifted provided Iran curbs its nuclear program. The resolution at the Security Council was unanimously backed by the 15-member’s body.
The UN Security Council reserves the right to re-impose sanctions if Iran fails to honor the terms of the historic agreement. Also, if the Security Council finds out about a breach, it will then vote within 30 days on a resolution to extend sanctions.
Additionally, if the council fails to vote on a resolution, the sanctions would be automatically re-imposed. This procedure prevents any of the veto powers who negotiated the accord, such as Russia and China, from blocking any move against Iran.
Frequent inspections are included in the agreement to make sure Iran sticks to the terms of the contract and plays by the rules.
It is worth noting that Iran’s current sanctions won’t be lifted until the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) submits a report to the Security Council verifying that Iran has taken certain nuclear-related measures outlined in the agreement.
