SHEBERGHAN (SW) – A number of shepherds can be seen in Jawzjan province selling off their herds owing to crippling drought and poverty.
A number of livestock breeders in the province told Salam Watandar the lasting drought has inflicted heavy financial losses on them. Jan Mohammad and Jalaluddin, two such livestock breeders, said many of the animals died, and they were forced to sell off sheep worth AFN 5000 for AFN 500.
They said if the government or aid agencies failed to help them in such testing times, they would lose the remaining 60 per cent of their stock as well very soon.
According to the traders, the prices of pasture grass has also swollen from AFN 400 to AFN 1000.
