‘IEC commissioners be referred to the AGO for trial’

17/12/2018

KABUL (SW) – A number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Monday lashed out at the Independent Election Commission for poor management and alleged rigging.

During today’s session, some members charged the IEC for taking bribe in return for favors and irregularities in the process. The replacement of former electoral commission employees with the new ones was also criticized.

Chairing today’s session, deputy speaker Humayon Humayon said he was not confident in the abilities of the IEC even before the October polls. He went on to say the WJ polls were held against the will of the house.

The deputy speaker demanded the president to refer the IEC chairman and all electoral commissioners to the AGO for trial.

A member of the house, Zakarya Sauda, said the initial results announced by the IEC does not match with the vote count at individual polling stations signifying the alleged rigging in the process. He added ragging insecurity and closure of roads deprived up to 70 per cent of Badakhshan residents the right to vote, however, the IEC figures show up to 60 per cent voters cast their votes in the provinces.

Salam Watandar wished to have the views of the IEC, but to no avail.
