HERAT CITY (SW) – The construction work began on a township in Herat province for the families of the security forces and repatriating former refugees.
Syed Hussein Alami Balkhi, the Minister of Refugees and Returnees, said on the occasion that this township, Sa’adat, is located 35 kilometers west of the city of Herat. According to the Minister, the township was considered by the government a few years ago, and work began on it in line with the Presidential Decree No. 305.
He said a total of two such townships – one in Kabul and the other one in Herat – are planned with the support of the UN Habitat.
On his term, Mohammad Asif Rahimi, governor of Herat, said that a total of 6,000 acres of land have been planned for the construction of this city, of which 2,000 acres include for the infrastructure. According to the governor of Herat, with the construction of this town, about 8,000 families will own homes of their own.
Herat governor added that the town will be built in two phases, the first phase of which will be completed in 30 months. According to Rahimi, the cost of building this town has not yet been determined by the UN Habitat yet, and they are trying to attract more than EUR 32 million for the project.
A number of returnees who have settled down here have been urging the government, especially the Ministry of Refugees and Returnees, to address the transport and security problems.
