MAIMANA (SW) – Scores of the Taliban rebels have staged coordinated assault on the Garzivan district in Faryab province, an official said on Saturday.
Sibghatullah Sailab, deputy chairman for the provincial council, told Salam Watandar the rebels’ assaults on Garzivan district began three days ago.
Mulla Faizullah, governor of the district, has also confirmed the attacks of the district. He said the rebels have overran the Dongh Qala, Begham Qishlaq and Ali Abad villages, and have reached close to the district headquarters. He added the Taliban from neighboring Jawzjan, Sari-e-Pul and Ghor have joined the rebels here to wage these assaults.
It is feared the district would fell to the Taliban if the government failed to take action. According to the district governor, 250 security forces – including soldiers, policemen and members of the local uprising force – are under the siege of the Taliban. He confirmed three security forces got killed and nine others got wounded while 20 Taliban rebels are killed and 25 others wounded.
Meanwhile, Abdul Kareem Yourish, provincial police chief, has discarded fears about the fall of the district, saying enough forces are stationed there.
