Traders irked by rise in import tariffs

KABUL (SW) – A number of traders claim thousands of cargo containers are stranded on ports due to surge in tariffs on imports.

In a protest demonstration here on Tuesday, the agitating traders said the unilateral move by the government to raise tariff has inflicted daily financial losses worth $ 1 million while Pakistanis and Iranian traders and taking advantage of the situation.

According to the traders, tariff per shipping container has been increased from AFN 150,000 to AFN 450,000. Khan Aqa Gulzad, one such trader, said this move by the government would encourage smuggling and joblessness.

Traders warned this move by the Ministry of Finance would increase distance between the government and the people.

Meanwhile, the MoF spokesman, Shamroz Khan Masjidi, has clarified the tariff has been increased after consultations with the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
