PUL-I-ALAM (SW) – More than half of public schools in Logar province lack proper buildings, officials revealed on Monday.
Abdul Wakeel Kalewaal, head of the directorate of education in Logar, told Salam Watandar there are a total of 305 public schools in the province, however, up to 118 do not have proper buildings. He lamented a large number of boys and girls study in make-shift tents, and also lack complete textbooks.
The head of the directorate of education went on to say president, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, had promised up to 6000 schools would be built across the country, and up to 130 of them would be developed in Logar. He added the ragging insecurity has forced many student to dropout of schools. He stated 12 new schools would be built here this year.
Commenting on this, Raheemullah Samoon, a teacher and civil society activist, said on top of other issues, lack of proper buildings are forcing many children away from studies.
In conversation with Salam Watandar, a number of students said they are forced to study under scorching sun in tents. There are an estimated 140,000 students enrolled in public schools here.
