KABUL (SW) – The forthcoming parliamentary elections would be held using biometric technology, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced on Wednesday.
Gulajan Abdul Badi Sayad, chairman IEC, told a presser at the IEC headquarters in Kabul that the commission is working on the mechanism to ensure biometric verification of voters for the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
This has been the main demand of the agitating political parties. Sayad stressed the control of the biometric system shall remain with the IEC.
In the meantime, Abdul Aziz Aryai, chairman of the Independent Election Complaint Commission, said some demands of the political parties are just, however, no one should be allowed to undermine the electoral process. He added those creating hurdles and posing threats to the process should be held accountable.
This comes as the Grand National Alliance of Afghanistan closed down IEC offices in a number of provinces in agitation.
