GHAZNI CITY (SW) – Though, the Taliban have been pushed out of the Ghazni city, but locals remain fearful about the return of the rebels.
The war-weary Ghazni residents informed Salam Watandar they have sustained heavy human and material losses, and cannot afford its repeat. Naseer Ahmad Faqiri, a member of the provincial council, urged the government to immediately rebuild the check posts and other security installations destroyed or damaged during the Taliban’s assaults on Ghazni.
In a bid to assure the locals about improved law and order situation, the provincial security officials announced to have launched clean-up operation by the special forces around the city. Mohammad Arif Noori, spokesman for the governor, promised the check posts would be rebuilt, army would be deployed at key junctures and additional check points would be established.
Following the Taliban’s massive assault on Ghazni city, the rebels also managed to overrun neighboring Deh Yak, Ajristan, Khogyani and Khwaja Umari distircts. The security forces have only managed to reclaim Deh Yak district so far.
