Taliban extorting money from students in Jawzjan

SHEBERGHAN (SW) – The Taliban rebels in Jawzjan province have collected extortions from students in Faizabad district, an official informed.

 Sher Mohammad Noor, member of the provincial council, informed Salam Watandar the Taliban have overran at least eight villages in the Faizabad district, and have directed students to pay extortion money worth up to AFN 5000 each to them.

A number of locals informed the Taliban have also directed them to arrange for their food and accommodation in the area. Qeemat Khaal and Zarghoona, two relatives of the affected students, said in this regard that they are too frightened to come out of homes as the rebels have warned them of dire consequences if the food served to them was not good.

Abdul Hafeez Khashi, director security at the police headquarters in Jawzjan, has acknowledged these reports.  Meanwhile, the Taliban spokesman,  Zabihullah Mujahed, has rejected these reports, and promised to look into the matter.
