“Actions against illegally armed men are on public demand”

15/07/2018

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said on Sunday investigations are ordered into alleged civilian casualties in Nangarhar and Paktia provinces as well as manhandling of captives in Faryab province.

Addressing a presser, the president reiterated that the law enforcement agencies are accountable before the law, and must adhere to human rights, regulations and discipline. He noted there is a national consensus towards strengthening system, supremacy of law and stability, but the presence of armed militias has become an issue of concern.

Ghani said operations in this connection have been executed in Uruzgan, Farah, Faryab and a number of other provinces in line with the public demand for supremacy of law. This comes as a number of illegally armed men have been rounded-up in different provinces.

Among those arrested include Nezamuddin Qaisari, district police chief and commander of local uprising militia in Faryab province. Widespread protest demonstrations have been staged in a number of provinces against his arrest.
