KABUL (SW): Veteran literary figure Abdullah Bakhtani Khidmatgar, who has to his credit a number of books in Pashto, including translations from Persian, Arabic, Russian and Spanish, passed away at the age of 93 on Saturday.
Born in Nangarhar’s Sur Rod district, late Bakhtani was also member of the ‘Wesh Zalmyan’ (Awaken Youth) literary movement as well as the Khudai Khidmatgar (Godly Servicemen) political movement led by the late Abdul Ghafar Khan (Bacha Khan) against the colonial British power in India.
Late Bakhtani received early education in Nangarhar and Kabul in contemporary, religious as well as scientific subjects, and went to Moscow to earn diploma in Russian literature in 1963. Apart from his untiring literary activities, Bakhtani also served at the Afghanistan Academy of Sciences.
Being trained by the legends of Pashto literature such as Master Gul Pacha Ulfat, Master Qayammudin Khadim, Master Siddiqullah Rishteen and Master Abdul Rauf Benawa, he has left behind more than one hundred books to his credit.
