NANGARHAR (SW): Close to 20, 000 inhabitants of Nanagarhar province would be provided alternative jobs in line with a counter-narcotics project by the Ministry of Counter-Narcotics (MoCN) and the U.S. Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs' Office of Afghanistan and Pakistan (INL/AP).
The project worth $ 22.5 million in this connection was inked on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Salamat Azimi, Minister for the MoCN, said this project would initially be implemented in the Achin, Chaparhar, Rodat, Sherzad, Kot and Khogyano distircts.
The project is aimed at encouraging alternate crops to counter the cultivation of poppy and drug trade in these areas. According to the MoCN officials, the project would run through 2020, and would focus on promoting the farming of fruit and nut trees in these areas.
