Parliamentarians are ‘ghost students’ in private institutions

08/01/2018

KABUL (SW): The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Monday summoned officials from the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) over a recent protest by the students and management of private higher-education institutions.

Mohammad Amir Kamawal, director private institutions’ affairs at the MoHE, told the house that the main issue in this regard is the presence of ‘ghost students’ in private institutions. He said an overwhelming majority of such students are parliamentarians, relatives of officials and influential individuals rather than someone belonging to poor families.

The MoHE officials told the house that the private institutions are compromising on standards.

Lalay Hamidzai and Wazma Safi, two members of the house, charged the MoHE for negligence, and issuing degrees to the powerful and rich against cash. The members urged the Ministry to get its act together, and bring reforms.

The MoHE officials promised to implement a program for reforms in this regard.
