953 media workers infected with COVID-19

KABUL (SW) – A new study by the NAI-Supporting Open media in Afghanistan has revealed that the media sector employees are among worst affected by the coronavirus.

Abdul Majeed Khilwatgar, the organization's chief executive, told a news conference today (Tuesday, June 30) that 953 media workers in Afghanistan had contracted the coronavirus, according to a survey conducted by the organization, and that 5 of them had died so far.

According to him, based on the survey, the number of media workers infected with COVID-19 is far higher than the number recorded so far.

The survey found that most media workers with coronavirus were registered in Kabul followed by Logar, Panjshir, Parwan, Kapisa and Maidan-Wardak provinces.

At least 10,000 people across the country work in the media, and about 10 percent are infected with the coronavirus, according to the NAI chief executive. He called on media executives to pay close attention to the health of their employees.

Meanwhile, a number of journalists have urged media officials to pay serious attention to protecting the lives of journalists.

According to the official statistics of the Ministry of Health, 31,517 positive coronavirus cases have been registered in the country so far, of which 745 patients have died and 14,036 other patients have been recovered.
